The city has about 102,000 residents, but its larger urban zone has a population of about 480,000 people.[2]

Olmütz (tschechisch Olomouc; [ˈɔlɔmɔuʦ])
ist die sechstgrößte Stadt Tschechiens, Verwaltungssitz des Olomoucký kraj, Sitz eines Erzbistums, der zweitältesten tschechischen Universität und eines der beiden tschechischen Obergerichte. Die Stadt war bis ins 17. Jahrhundert historisches Zentrum Mährens und hat auch heute eine bedeutende Stellung als starkes Handels-, Kultur- und Verwaltungszentrum.

Der Name Olomouc bedeutet ‚kahler Berg‘
(alttschech. holy ‚kahl‘ und mauc ‚Berg‘)[3].
Der Name der Stadt lautet auf mährisch-hannakisch Olomóc oder Holomóc, auf deutsch Olmütz und auf lateinisch Eburum oder Olomucium.
